Strategy Illustrations
Model complex concentrated-stock and liquidity decisions in a versioned, advisor-only planning workspace.
Open the Workspace
From My Plan, open Plan settings, choose Strategy, and select Strategy Illustrations. The workspace is available to advisors with edit access and starts from the client’s current account data without changing the source Net Worth records.
Set Up the Source Position
Choose the concentrated account, confirm the market value and tax lots, and record any transferability restrictions. Review basis and holding data before relying on the modeled tax outcome.
Build the Funding Strategy
Set the annual planning horizon, annual lifestyle, direct-indexing, and charitable goals, then choose Automatic funding or Manual percentages. Automatic funding applies the exact scheduled stock sale first and fills only the remaining annual need through the selected SBLOC, Box Spread, and cash waterfall; changing the sale pace therefore changes borrowing without changing the client’s goals. Excess sale proceeds can remain in strategy cash or move to direct indexing. Manual mode preserves advisor-entered source percentages for custom cases. Add the concentrated-stock growth assumption and annual overrides, financing costs, tax-loss harvesting assumptions, and charitable DAF gifts.
Understand Financing Tax Treatment
SBLOC interest can be modeled as potential investment interest when the advisor confirms investment-purpose tracing. The deduction is limited by the modeled eligible net investment income and unused interest carries forward. Box-spread cost remains an economic financing cost with no modeled deduction or capital-loss character. Confirm both treatments with the client’s tax advisor.
Create and Organize Scenarios
Each library row is a separate scenario. Saving inside it creates a new revision of that scenario. Clone makes a new editable scenario from the current assumptions, while Archive moves a scenario to the Archived tab without deleting it; Restore returns it to the active library.
Compare and Communicate
Review the base calculation, alternate scenarios, stress tests, the annual portfolio-balance tracker, progressive or blended tax assumptions, and carryforward effects. Supplemental Exchange Fund, Oil & Gas, and Qualified Opportunity Zone rows are presentation-only references unless separate calculations are added. In Report controls, set the title, include the firm logo, and choose PDF sections; assumptions appear immediately after the cover. Use Reports Center to assemble the strategy pages into a broader client package, or open the Estate flow-chart workspace for the estate diagram.
Archive an Illustration
Use Archive from the illustration list or detail header to remove an illustration from the active workspace. Archiving preserves its saved revision history instead of permanently deleting the planning record.
Planning Limitations
Strategy Illustrations are hypothetical planning analyses, not tax, legal, or investment advice. Confirm tax-lot data, financing availability, security-transfer rules, and final tax treatment with the client’s qualified professionals.
